Accredited by the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC), NCC is a national agency that provides criminal background and identity verification services and partners with healthcare, financial services, staffing, retail and other sectors to mitigate corporate risks such as workplace violence, theft and fraud.”

All personal data is processed and stored securely in Australia. NCC offers national police checks which automatically cover all Australian states and territories.

How do I access and conduct the new NCC checks?

No need to log in to multiple different portals! The API integration between NCC and Xref means everything is completed within Xref. 

Once you have access to Xref’s Trust Marketplace, simply log in to Xref to order and review your checks. 

The smart integration between NCC and Xref automates administration for HR teams. Candidate or employee information is pre-populated and the check is sent to the person to obtain their consent. 

NCC is then responsible for running the verification process. NCC will reach out to the candidate directly should they require additional documents or information. Status updates and results are returned to the relevant People Record in Xref. 

How quickly are NCC Australian Criminal History Checks completed? 

The National Crime Check process is simple and user friendly, backed by cutting edge security. Most NCC Criminal History and Visa Checks are returned in seconds, once your candidate or employee has signed their consent for the check to be conducted. 

If NCC requests further documentation, the check will be completed once your candidate or employee submits the required information.

Occasionally, some check results may take up to 10 business days, due to a manual processing performed by the ACIC and relevant police jurisdictions. If this occurs, the status of your check will be updated in the People Record on Xref. 

If the Criminal History Check or Visa Check that your organisation is conducting is being assessed manually, the status of the check will be updated in Xref thereby notifying you of the progress of the check.

With the support of the Xref and NCC integration, complete your Australian Criminal History and Visa Checks in three simple steps:

1. Login to Xref and select ‘Background Check’ under ‘Send a request’. Select the relevant Checks you would like to conduct - either a Criminal History Check or Work Rights Check. Or, you can send these background checks as part of your Xref reference check process.

2. Fill out the required fields and the check is then sent to the person for their consent. NCC also supports the ability to conduct bulk Australian Criminal History and Work Rights Checks so you can conduct these checks on more than one person at a time. 

3. Status updates and results of completed checks are returned to the People Record in Xref. Your candidate or employee will also receive a copy of the completed NCC check. 

It can be prudent to download the results of a completed Criminal History Check as NCC, for security purposes, will automatically delete Australian Criminal History Check data every three months.

Who can a police check be conducted on?

A police check can be conducted on any person who currently resides in Australia. However, it is vital that an organisation receives consent from the person in question before conducting this check. When using the Xref and NCC integration, NCC will obtain consent prior to conducting the check.

Who should conduct these checks?

With regard to a Right to Work Check, also known as a Visa Check, it is important that every Australian employer confirms if their employees have the right to work in Australia. 

It is also highly recommended that all employers conduct a Police Check on new hires. There is also value in periodically rechecking all current employees throughout the course of their employment with your organisation.

Make sure to follow any and all employment legislation relevant to your industry including knowing what checks to conduct, obtaining the relevant consent and what the appropriate timeframes are for such checks. 

What’s the difference between the current Xref AFP Police Check and this new check via NCC? 

AFP Police Checks are especially relevant when an organisation needs information on issues relating to citizenship and/or immigration and would like insights about their candidate or employee on a global level. 

Until now, Xref has previously only offered global Police Checks with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) via our partnership with Certn. 

NCC Australian Criminal History Checks are generally used for standard employment and volunteers. NCC Australian Criminal History Checks are conducted via the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC). 

NCC Australian Criminal History Checks are nationally coordinated, meaning your organisation will receive information from all Australian states and territories.

There are many industries that now mandate that organisations have up to date Criminal History Checks. To support this, NCC specialises in checks for industries such as:

• The Gig Economy (such as background checks for Uber drivers)
• Universities and education

• Charity and Not-For-Profits

*It should be noted that this is not an exhaustive list of industries that NCC services. 

Certain regulated roles, such as specific government employment or security clearances for example, may stipulate that an AFP check is needed. In this instance, an NCC Australian Criminal History Check may not be sufficient.
